Volunteer- You can help save lives!

Volunteers are critical to the American Red Cross Blood Services' mission of supplying the safest possible, most reliable, most cost effective blood through voluntary donations. As an American Red Cross volunteer you can help others, gain experience and make friends. Your talents will be used to help the Red Cross to provide blood to people in need.

The American Red Cross is an organization governed, supported and primarily staffed by volunteers. Today, 1.3 million Americans throughout the nation are Red Cross volunteers. The New York-Penn Region depends upon its volunteers to provide services that are essential to its mission. We truly could not save lives without you!

The New York Penn Region offers a variety of Volunteer Opportunities

Descriptions are listed below:

Blood Drive Volunteers

Receptionist/ Canteen volunteers receive their training and are scheduled through their local chapters. They work at blood drives in their area. Schedules are flexible and you choose the drives that fit your personal schedule.
  • Receptionist volunteers welcome and sign in blood donors, answer questions and provide excellent customer service. These volunteers often have great impact on the donor's experience because they are the first to meet and greet them.
  • Canteen volunteers are vital to our donor's overall donation experience. Volunteers monitor donors for reaction signs and encourage them to donate again. Volunteers serve refreshments and promote a positive impression of the American Red Cross.
  • Pack Labeling Assist at a blood drive in your area by attaching appropriate labels to packs used to collect blood. Your assistance with this detailed and critical task allows the staff to concentrate its efforts on the blood donor's experience. Up to 10 hours of training required, previous experience as a volunteer at the blood drives is recommended.

Drivers

Volunteers provide a critical service by transporting blood from area blood drives, delivering lifesaving blood to hospitals and making shuttle runs between the centers in the Region. Red Cross vehicles are provided, however, reimbursement is given if you need to use your own vehicle. Centers are located in Rochester (West Henrietta), Buffalo, Syracuse/ Binghamton, and Albany. We rely on these volunteers for their dedication and commitment.

Warehouse Assembler

Work with your hands to put together supplies used at blood drives. You must be able to stand while assembling kits. Individuals, families or groups find this a fun and rewarding way to make a difference. West Henrietta center only.

Office/ Clerical Support

Volunteers provide support in West Henrietta by doing general office work in various departments or in the warehouse. Typical duties include making packets, copying, filing, and light data entry. Your support helps make possible the daily operations that support blood collection and manufacturing in the Region.
