Double Red Cell Drives

View PDF version of this page

Today’s blood drive coordinators can save more lives than ever before with the help of new technology and a process called "Double Red Cell".

Most patients today receive specific blood components (platelets, red blood cells and/or plasma), rather than whole blood. Double red cell technology is the most efficient, donor-friendly method of collecting the blood components most frequently needed by patients in our community. As a sponsor, you have the opportunity to have this new and innovative technology at your blood drives with only minimal changes to regular blood drive requirements!

Here are several things to consider:

  • Regular blood donors can give more blood at your drives and they can donate less frequently.
  • Donors and sponsors receive double credit for each double red cell donation.
  • Small and large organizations can almost double their contribution, without increasing their base of donors.
  • Donors AND sponsors can help more patients and prevent community blood shortages of the most needed blood types (O and B).
  • Double red cell donations use a smaller needle than regular whole blood donations, which helps to recruit needle-shy people.
  • When donating double red cells, donors receive fluid replacement, and greater hydration helps them feel more comfortable during and after the donation process.
  • Additional site requirements include 42 square feet of additional space, at least two electrical outlets, and preferably elevator access for multi-story buildings.

Donor Eligibility Requirements

Males:
150 lb min. weight
5ft. 1in. min. height

Females:
175 lb. min. weight
5ft. 5in. min. height

All donors must be at least 17 years of age and in generally good health with a 40% iron level. Double red cell donors are eligible to donate every 112 days (every 16 weeks).
