Apheresis

Apheresis is a very special type of blood donation given by an exceptional group of people.

"Apheresis donors represent an elite group of humanitarians in our communities. Every time they donate, they are helping to save someone's life. They truly are heroes."

- Larry Lundberg, Apheresis Director

Less than 1% of the population donates apheresis. But those who do keep coming back to donate more!

Apheresis (A-fur-EE-sis) - means taking away. When you give an apheresis donation, you give only one part of your blood: platelets, plasma, granulocytes, or red blood cells (double red).

During your apheresis donation, whole blood is drawn from you into a sterile, single-use, kit. Your blood is centrifuged by the apheresis machine right next to you. Only the needed components are retained. The unused components, along with saline solution (to replenish lost fluids) and an anti-coagulant (to prevent clotting), are returned to you as part of your donation.

The End To pass the time, you can watch TV, choose a movie from our video collection, or bring your favorite movie with you. Plasma donors can also choose from a variety of magazines or bring their own.
